Preface:-

The Government initiated the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme in order to uplift the standard of living and lifestyle of the slum dwellers in Greater Mumbai. As per the prevailing Government Policy, a hut holder who has his name in the Electoral Roll of 1.1.1995 or prior thereto or who produces the proof of his residence and who resides in the same place is declared eligible under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme and thereupon he is allotted a flat of 225 square feet area free of cost. The Union Government recently declared its National Housing and Shelter Policy. Under the National Housing Policy, a flat of 269 square feet area is permissible. Since the Policy of State Government accords with the National Housing Policy, the proposal of allotting a flat of 269 square feet instead of 225 square feet under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme was under the consideration of the Government.

Government Resolution:-

Since the National Housing Policy permits a 269 square feet flat, the Government has decided to allot the eligible hut holders under Slum Rehabilitation Scheme, a flat of 269 square feet area free of cost. Each flat shall comprise a bedroom, a living room, kitchen and a separate toilet.

These new criteria shall not apply to the schemes under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme which are already completed or which are in progress. However, the beneficiaries of Slum Rehabilitation Schemes which have been granted a Commencement Certificate, but where under the actual work of Scheme has not commenced, shall be permitted a flat of 269 square feet area (carpet).
